Exhibition Entry Information

General Information
The exhibition will be held at The Handa Gallery, Wells Maltings, Staithe St, Wells-next-the-Sea NR23 1AN from 3rd to 27th February 2022.

Submissions of work are invited from visual artists working in water-based media. Artists must be over the age of 18, and live in, or be associated with, the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Bedfordshire. All work must be original - no prints will be accepted.

All submitted paintings must be in watercolour or a water-soluble medium for at least 80% of the painting.  Water-based media includes acrylic but this must not be used in impasto form. Water-soluble oils may not be used.

Works must be on acid-free paper only.

Work must have been painted in the last 3 years and not been exhibited within 20 miles of the venue. Work that has previously been submitted for any SEAW exhibition (physical or online) will not be eligible. Framed work must not exceed 80cm in height or width. Submissions must be the original work of the artist named on the submission form. Work must be for sale and copyright vested in the named artist.

If non-members have had work selected for 3 years and have been invited to become a member of the SEAW, the non-member must thereafter become a member of the society in order to submit paintings to the SEAW Selected exhibition.

Non-members wishing to apply for membership should submit 3 paintings. If at least 1 painting is selected, the artist will be encouraged to submit to future exhibitions e.g. the Open exhibition, WaterWays 2022, at the Babylon Gallery and asked for a further digital portfolio for consideration by the committee for membership eligibility. If the non-member artist also had work selected for the SEAW online show in October 2020 and/or WaterWays Open at the  Babylon Gallery 2021, the Committee will invite the artist to become an Associate Member.

Work must be securely framed and glazed with D-rings and strong framing cord securely attached to the frame. Please do not use household or garden string. Works in metal frames or clip frames will not be accepted. Only cream, off-white or white mounts will be allowed although a ¼ inch coloured edge to separate painting from mount will be acceptable. In the case of float mounting only cream, off-white or white backing mounts must be used. All frames must be sealed with framing tape, not masking tape or Sellotape.

All submitted works must bear a securely attached adhesive label on the reverse side of the work, stating name of artist, title, medium, size, price, process and inspiration. If your work is selected, an SEAW label will be emailed to you for completion.

In addition, a luggage label with similar information must be attached to one of the D-rings with cord long enough to enable the label to be hung and read over the top of the painting. If your work is selected, an SEAW label will be emailed to you for completion.

View our guide to presentation of paintings here.

Photographing your work for submission  and any publicity or promotion

Paintings must be photographed well and not through glass. Photographs must be of the painting only with no mount, frame or white paper edges showing. The Committee reserves the right to refuse poorly photographed artwork and to reject any works considered to be of unsuitable content. Please review our guide to photographing works for submission here.

Image Uploads

Images should be referenced with the artist name, painting title, exhibition title as follows: SurnameFirstname_painting title_exhibition.jpeg here is an example; OtherAnn_a Painting_Awash22.jpeg
Image files should be JPG or PNG and no more than 5MB large. Upload time will depend on your internet connection speed so please be patient. If you are having problems uploading your images please use image editing software to resize your image to approximately 1600 pixels wide and then save as a new file. Image file names should not be too long and should not contain any invalid characters such as ' " & % * ( ) < > / \ ~ # + =

Work selected for exhibition will be expected to be for sale. The minimum sale price for selected works is £150 and a maximum price of £650. Commission of 35% is charged by the Society. It will be assumed that the sale price at the physical exhibition includes the cost of any frame and our commission. Please allow for these points when pricing your work. If your work is sold at the exhibition you have a responsibility to account for UK taxes with H.M. Revenue & Customs where applicable.

Description of work
Artists are asked to indicate their painting process in the description section and give an indication of the inspiration for the work being submitted.

All communication from SEAW will be by email. Artists are responsible for checking whether their work has been selected. Applicants will be able to login on the Selection Notification Date 19th January 2022 to find out if they have been selected.

The judges will select the works for the exhibition. The judges will consider all correctly completed submissions. The decision of the judges on all matters is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The judges for 2022 are:

Lillias August RI: Artist

John Crossley RWS: Artist

Richard Sorrell PPRWS, NEAC: Artist

Artists are responsible for insuring their own work. All works accepted for the exhibition will be displayed entirely at the artist's risk.  Organisers and the gallery will not accept liability for loss or damage occurring during the exhibition.

Delivery and Collection
Artists are responsible for the delivery and collection of their work at the Gallery. All artwork must be unpacked and the packaging materials removed by the person bringing the artwork. Please make use of padded artwork bags (not bubble-wrap and tape) to protect artwork during transportation. This cuts down on the time it takes to make the delivery and the time it will take to remove unsold works. No gallery storage is available for packaging. It is also the artist's responsibility to package their artwork for removal at the end of the exhibition. Work not collected at the stated times will be subject to a daily charge of £10 and will be disposed of after one week, unless there are exceptional circumstances preventing collection.

By submitting to the Exhibition you are deemed to accept and agree to the following:

  • The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • I understand that the Organisers reserve the right to make such changes to the Exhibition arrangements and these Terms & Conditions as may be deemed necessary by circumstances.
  • I authorise the Organisers to process, store, and utilise the data in my submission and agree that, if selected for exhibition, images of my work can be freely used by the Organisers, the Gallery and associated organisations for promotional and publicity purposes.
  • All information provided by me is true and accurate and that the work submitted is wholly of my own creation.
  • I have read and understood the full terms and conditions and by submitting this application I accept and agree to observe all the Terms and Conditions therein.
